Question #6
Classified employees with Degrees not paid according to their education. How should classified employees be compensated?
Doyle Costello District #1
I am not sure I understand this question.
Keith S. Gryboski District #1
I do not understand this question as worded. Some positions, like the State Education Superintendent are required to have a certain level of education. This should be true for all positions. There should be financial incentives for all employees to continue to add to their education. That does not mean that just because you have a master’s degree, you should be paid more. The pay must be directed towards the benefit of the degree to the job description. We need to do a complete audit as to the pay of all positions, the education or experience required by the position.
Elizabeth Moffly District #2
Our district paid for a salary study that has been implemented.

Classified employees are critical to the functioning of our schools, but perhaps are often overlooked. This is food for thought for me, because I was not aware that classified employees were not paid according to their education level. I will put some feelers out and look into that.
As a leader of the education group Charleston Area Community Voice for Education, I often receive information from teachers, staff, and parents about concerning issues in our schools. After looking into the matter, I provide answers or direct people to the right place.
In some cases, I educate members of the group on the issue, and if the need arises, I will launch a campaign for change. This experience of listening to concerns and finding solutions will hep me as a school board member.
Seana J. Flynn District #2
Classified employees should be paid for their years of experience just as teachers are. We should also create incentives and streamline the pathways for certification and further education.

Classified employee compensation should be benchmarked against neighboring districts and states to ensure Charleston County is competitive. The Board should also advocate to the state legislature to ensure the state-funded portions of salaries keep pace with the needs of the district and the growing costs of living.
Courtney Waters District #4
Classified employees deserve a living wage commensurate with their education and experience. When we think about the culture of a school, we need all the adults in the building to be happy, productive and ready to support students. Everyone performs better at work when they feel valued and appreciated. We must ensure classified employees feel they are part of a community making difference for kids, and fair pay goes a long way in that.

Classified positions should consistently reflect the minimum qualifications in the job descriptions. Most classified positions only require a high school diploma, therefore, someone with a degree often chooses to accept a position below their qualifications. Years' of experience should define the scale in classified positions.
