Question #18
How will you engage the community to improve public schools in the district?
Doyle Costello District #1
I would like to meet with senior leadership in the communities to find ways in which the communities can improve their schools.
Keith S. Gryboski District #1
Certain questions should not be asked without giving the responder a chance to explain. The previous question is one that requires clarification. As to support increase in retired educator's benefits, I answered yes. I would love every state retired employee to have an increase in their benefits. However, this is a legislative question as it deals with the state employment system. The TARIE(sp?) program was a great program when first developed. It failed when it was expanded beyond its original design. I do not think the question should be asked of a potential school board member.
Back to the pending question.
Due to the substantial number of constituents whom I represent, to say I will be accessible at every hour is ridiculous. I do pledge to continue my website, as a resource tool for my constituents and district staff, especially teachers and principals, as to what I am doing as a board member. This is going to be a learning process in developing a line of communication that works. I would like to people to think of me as someone who returns their call. There must be boundaries for all involved. Like teachers, we all must appreciate that we have families or other interest that require our time. I would welcome the opportunity to speak at any school event. It is important to speak to the students directly.

I always reached out to the community through the constituent district meetings across the district. I attended Interdenominational Association aka IMA where faith based leaders of the AME ministers meet. I also attend NAACP meetings. The ugly truth is we have a problem in the black community when we compare black vs white achievement. Thats the target. How to improve learning in this community.
Sarah Shad Johnson District #2
If elected, I will still maintain my education group which is a huge network of community stakeholders across the county. When I was on the District 2 Constituent Board, I had a separate Facebook page to update and interact with constituents. If elected, I will have a similar page for this position.
I also will work to improve the current transparency issues of the school board and school district.
Seana J. Flynn District #2
The most important thing I will do to engage the public is give them a voice. I strongly believe that focus groups should be created that include both parents, students and good samaritans. This will encourage a line of communication between the elected and the people they should represent.

I will be present in the community and meet with parents, educators, administrators and stakeholder organizations regularly. I will communicate clearly and honestly and solicit feedback from subject matter experts.
Courtney Waters District #4
I think the board should be doing full scale community engagement at least once per year, and ideally twice. That involves listening sessions in all school communities.
Kevin D Hollinshead District #4
Yes
Vivian S Pettigrew District #5
Through meetings at schools, community events, literature, etc.
Melissa Couture District #5
That is not my area of knowledge. We do need parents and the community at large involved to be successful, and I am open to any ideas on how to accomplish that.

This is an easy solution. We have to meet the community where they are. I will make sure that I am available to schools for PTA nights, I will have an open line to all of my constituents, and I will create a way for teachers to reach out anonymously with any and all concerns.
Jennifer Mieras District #7
Community members are stakeholders in - and sometimes customers of - CCSD. As permitted by the Board of Trustees, I will attend community events and hear community member concerns that are under the purview of The Board. When community members have concerns that need to be addressed to CCSD staff, I will encourage them to follow the proper chain of command.
Joy Brown District #7
I would like to see real community engagement regularly that is available in several formats. We should send out surveys, hold community forums, and have monthly newsletters to help keep families, teachers, and community members informed on what is happening in the district. We should be encouraging round table discussions with our educators and the school board so their voices can be represented.

I will continue to be involved in community events and use my voice in speaking truth to power about the ability to impact public schools in the district.
Dr. Carol Tempel District #9
